Part 1: Peter and Zak: The Dance Party

So we have decided that we are the most qualified to tell this story as we were there from the beginning. So after calling our parents (we love you mommy and daddy!) (zak: and mom sorry for cutting out last night) and greetings with the homeless mayor, we headed for home. We were then called over by Henry (the guy who lives under us) and his friends. We chatted for a while, we were joined by the Leahs and Tali. After some small talk and large talk, Henry inquired about Zak’s guitar playing skills. Eager to show off, he sent Leah to steal the guitar from Becca (who was not pleased but agreed because she is so nice <– written by Becca) we exchanged songs back and forth. Eventually these songs became dances as Henry brought out his phone and began playing music for his sons to dance to (ps: one was a miniature version of Michael Jackson). We decided to go grab some of our music to play on the ipod speakers, so Peter went up stairs to steal the ipod speakers from Becca…Becca after the second request decided to come down to see what the fuss was about..with Spencer. As we began to show our music, our little gathering turned into a full out STREET PARTY! More and more people came as we progessed onto the street and we showed off our different cultures, with dance. They matched our Soulja Boi with their Jai Ho. They ended up bringing a car to pump the tunes. It was quite a party. We did everything from Dr. Jones to the Hora. We danced late into the night until we were too tired to dance anymore and we retired into our homes. Though they want another one tonight..though we are not sure we are up to it after the long day we had. To be continued…

IMMEDIATELY!!

Part 2: Becca, Zak, Tali and Peter:

We woke up this morning to the booming sound of the Pirates of the Carribean Soundtrack. Waking us all up for the wonderful breakfast set up by the teachers at Yorkhouse. This breakfast included the whitest bread you know, oranges, toppings, and Becca and Peter’s WATERMELON (that cost us a whopping 48 rupees for a 6 kilo watermelon) and we were not pleased. We were planning on sitting on the roof and eating it all ourselves. After breakfast we left Yorkhouse and travelled to a school being built by the Brahbrah’s, Sunbeam, and the Merskey’s. We don’t remember the name, but we remember the school. We were taken on a tour of the school aswell as the Jakobs Old Folks Home (where we were greated by sweet old people and a weee bebe) and the guest house. After which we were sorted into groups at the school to do some manual labour. This included: polishing, painting, sanding, decorating, gardening, and moving earth (the worst thing in the known universe). The earth moving began with Peter, who was joined by the valiant Zak. Zak was then betrayed and the job of earth moving was dumped on him (literally). The job was then given to Spencer, then tali (but not really) and then Leah Bandler. We are sorry to everyone who had to do this. Tali, Becca, Merskey and Alex painted nice pictures for the wall (well Becca and Alex tried…). After a long, hot, tiring, blistering, hot, painstaking, tenacious, pedantic, HOT! morning (ending in an epic paint fight), we went to lunch. It took us a while to get there however, because we got lost about 5 times. When we finally found our lunch it was very good, spicy, and HOT (like the day).

We came home and brought a little bit of Mexico to India by hosting India’s largest siesta. We slept. It was good. We relaxed. It was good. (sorry Ms. Bauld, our english has gotten significantly worse over our stay). Zak, Peter, and Spencer decided to journey to Leidons (the only american restraunt around here). We also bought a blue ray version of the Lion King from a spunky child next door, and then headed home with ice cream.

Overall, the day was good. And hot.Tata for now! (tata is goodbye in Tamil)

So happy to hear you guys went to the school and THANK YOU for all of your hard (and hot) work! What a great time you guys are having. Leah – a phone call would be nice?
Miss you lots, enjoy your last week and eat lots of spicy food for us!
    Love, Mom and Dad

Wow guys, great blogs today! (Sorry Alex and Spencer for some reason I can’t read yours from yesterday). On the phone, Leah mentioned she relished the chaos and the ‘unexpected’…Your spontaneous party, colourful breakfast and a huge day of hard, physical work (followed by ice cream) illustrates just that!

    Thanks for sharing your days!

    Kalla Bandler

Wow, GREAT BLOGGING TATA and all. Hey, am I the ONLY mother to NOT receive a phone call from my girl???? I quess Leah M as well hasn’t called?? Anyway, a phone call would be nice, but, I don’t want to complain:) too much. The spontaneity and cultural dance combos sound like so much fun. These blogs really get my imagination going. I do wish I were there to dance with all of you (groan away Tal). Zak and Peter and Spencer, I feel your pain with the manual work of moving dirt. I am sure you all are greatly appreciated.
    Pix again please!!:) Helen

Great blog guys. Sounds like a fun, wild, and incredible day. Love the dance party. I am sure much different from the Saturday night parties here, in TO. Watermelon, on the rooftop sounds decadent, but nice that you all shared it for breakfast. I imagine that you all welcome the sedentary homework vs. the moving of the earth that awaits you. Enjoy, enjoy, and enjoy X0 Shari. We are so proud of all of you!

What an incredible picture you have painted! I am so glad to hear that you are having so many spontaneous experiences – they can make a trip so special. You will have to bring the block party idea back to Toronto, although I expect our neighbours would have something to say about it. Having just returned with 12 students from Martinique, I can appreciate how some of you are responding so positively to the different values you find in a foreign country. We put such a high value on material wealth in North America, and yet are so poor in terms of the “social capital” you speak of – the hugs, the smiles, and the willingness to interact. I hope that you don’t find Toronto too “cold” when you return. You’ll have to make it your business to warm it up!
We look forward to having you back and hearing all your stories.
    All the best,
    Mr. Hamilton

Another amazing day with lots of fun stories! I love the street party event… with the sharing of our different cultures through dance and music. Peter had just told us on the phone that the watermelon there was delicious. It sounds like extra fun to eat that sweet juicy fruit on the rooftop. The earth moving sounds absolutely exhausting especially in that kind of heat but I’m sure all that work was appreciated. Have a wonderful last week! We look forward to seeing you Peter on Friday. Love from us all!

PS We have also not been able to read Alex and Spencer’s bloc from yesterday

Thank you so much for all the hard work done in the heat at Global Pathways School, you are troopers! Ms. Zeibots and I return in mid-May (less heat) and will be very grateful when we see the result of all your work. We are excited about our new school and the possibilities for the future. Having met the people who own the house you are staying in, I know how hospitable they are. We got invited to a wedding celebration (the day of) that we, unfortunately, could not attend. You are so fortunate to have experienced sharing in this kind of community celebration – even better that it was so impromptu – and it says a lot about being open to different, although shared, cultural experiences. Alex, I am so impressed with your ability to convey your experiences in such a vivid way through the written word. No matter what else I conveyed to students, as a teacher, expressing themselves through writing was a priority – you are exemplifying that. Enjoy the rest of your stay and look forward to hearing more about your experiences of India.

    Hi!
Thank you so much Peter, Zak, Tali and Becca! Your words are the next best thing to being there. The description of the street party is wonderful and shows the amazing connection you are making with each other. We are looking forward to your return but I know it will be hard to leave. Savor the rest of your time. Caroline (Mom) xoxo

  10. Josh Klein Says:

    Hey guys!!
It sounds like you are having the time of your lives; street dance parties, siestas, shoveling dirt… the best things ever!
I just wanted to wish you all the best and say that you are all missed.

    Be well,
    Josh.
