The York School Student Blogs

About me…

September 17, 2010 · No Comments

Hi world, this is Alex. I’m in grade 9 at the York School, living in the Great White North. I am writing this blog because i have to, but this seems interesting and ill give it a shot. My biggest hobby is definitely following sports, and entering leagues for money (I always win of course….i do I swear!). In fact, i just entered a hockey and basketball pool, but the hockey pool is the one that I will be talking most about, because i’m Canadian.

For it, there are seven (including myself) people each betting $10. It’s a winner-take-all style so the pot is 70 bucks. The draft is snaked (meaning that the person who picked last in the first round, picks first in the second round, etc.), and i ended up getting the fourth overall pick, which i’m okay with because it’s smack in the middle, picking evenly in all rounds.

The pool is pretty simple stats-wise. Points are worth 1, plus-minus is whatever the player’s plus-minus is at the end of the season, and each PIM is worth 0.25 points *Sound of needle screeching off of a record*. Thats right, you want players with PIMs. For goalies, wins are worth 2, OTL is worth 1 and SO are worth 5. 15 forwards, 8 defenceman, 2 goalies and 1 rookie must be drafted. There are so many because if only 10 players were drafted, and one gets injured, you’re toast.

I should first tell you about the other people in the pool. First, there is a guy named Koch. That is his last name, but everyone calls him that anyways. He got lucky and got the first pick. Next, there is a kid named Shady. He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, but he gets by. He is a smart kid, books wise, but not street wise. Fortunately, this pool is street wise. Third is a guy named Patty. This guy is very unique, because he is also really, really smart in school. The problem is that he doesn’t think things through very well. After him is Max, who is British and doesn’t know anything about hockey. Next is Chris, who is new at my school, but seems like a cool kid. Last is Brandon, who is really smart as well as street smart.

The first round has already taken place, and your awesome blogger will tell you what happened:

Koch landed the first pick, and picked Crosby.

Shady got the second pick, and got Ovechkin.

Third was Patty, and he decided to pick Malkin.

With my fourth pick, I decided to take Backstrom.

Fifth was Max, who picked Stamkos.

Then Chris took Marc Savard (…yeah not very smart)

Brandon ended the first round with Henrik Sedin (It is speculated that he will take his twin with his next pick)

The Blog Father

Thats all for now, i still have to get Chris for his pick.
