Bloggers Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power recently published a book appropriately named after their hit fashion blog, Who What Wear. Being one of my favorite style blogs to follow, I picked up a copy as soon as it hit shelves and have been reading it religiously ever since. Much like the website, the Who What Wear book translates fashion and beauty trends in a way that makes style accessable to everyone. The book covers everything from discovering your personal style to interpreting/pulling off trends to what to wear for specific occasions. Having finished the book, I must say that chapter 6 is my favorite part. This chapter talks about “trend oversaturation”- when a trend has peaked, spread to the masses and is officially exhausted. Or simply when you suddenly realize that everyone (including yourself) is wearing the same thing. According to the authors, trend oversaturation is not a good thing- and I must say that I agree.

The book includes a helpful way of deciphering whether or not a style or trend is still “in”- a quick quiz, which I have included below:

1. Who is currently wearing the trend?

A. Tastemakers: fashionable celebrities, socialites and models

B. Impersonators: random ladies in the grocery store, your manicurist, middle schoolers

2. What is it worn with?

A. Classic and timeless items

B. Ultra-trendy or ultra-out gear

3. Where has it spread?

A. Only cutting-edge boutiques and high-end department stores

B. Knockoff versions are avalable at mass discount chains

If you’ve selected the letter B for any of the above questions, your trend may be suffering from oversaturation.

Personally, I find that if you are concerned about whether or not a trend or style is still in, the answer is pretty clear- if you have to ask, it’s probably not. Anyways, besides this, the book also includes a “most frequently asked questions” section which covers many common trend questions, such as finding the best sunglass shape for your face, and shopping effectively at discount chain stores (like Forever 21) without looking cheap. The book is  really helpful, and for just $24.95 this style guide can be yours.
